People with disabilitie shail social cash transfer

People with disabilities in Rumphi District have commended the Social Cash Transfer Programme for improving their livelihoods.

There are 556 beneficiaries with disabilities out of 3 606 households under the programme in the district.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, James Njikho from Yawato Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikulamayembe, said the programme empowered him with capital to establish businesses that support his family.

He said he used to struggle to feed his family before he was enrolled in the programe in 2018.

Njikho, who has visual disability, said he sells beans, rice and sometimes runs a butchery, depending on demand.

He said: “I am now able to meet my children’s school needs such as fees, clothing and others through the businesses.

“This year I was able to buy fertilisers for my maize and tobacco fiends. I expect to produce five bales of tobacco this year.”

Another beneficiary with physical disability Marita Vikhumbo from Chisokono Village in T/A Mwahenga said she owns six goats and is able to support 11 children, including five grandchildren.

She said she joined a village savings and loans group which enables her to save and borrow money.

Rumphi district desk officer for the programme Abel Ndlovu said many beneficiaries are investing the money they receive into businesses.

Social Cash Transfer Programme is under the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project and the World Bank funds it in Rumphi.
